Free Rice

Play a game … and help end world hunger? Where do I sign up?

Free Rice is an excellent place to waste a few of your online minutes. What you see is a word game, which keeps track of your responses to synonym questions and assigns you a Vocab Level, which changes as you play and which you can improve by answering three in a row correctly (don’t cheat 😉 ). What happens behind the scenes, and what you get a visual of on the right-hand side of the screen, is that for every question you answer correctly, 20 grains of rice are donated through the United Nations.

Sound silly, or like a scam? Maybe, but I doubt it:

  • Free Rice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.
  • The creators claim that the cost for the site is covered by ads at the bottom, which change with each new question or page.
  • The site was created in October, 2007, and as of this entry, 6,025,068,330 grains of rice were reported to have been donated. That’s a lot-ta rice!

Do yourself, and someone else, a favor: if you have a minute to spare, please give it a try. If you get some wrong, try again.
